What GEO means

GEO is the practice of improving how often and how accurately a company, product, or point of view appears in generated answers. The target is not merely a blue-link visit. It can be a citation, inclusion in a shortlist, accurate product framing, or a recommendation that moves a buyer forward.

GEO and SEO

SEO makes pages discoverable, retrievable, and competitive in search. GEO influences whether a brand is understood, mentioned, cited, and recommended in generated answers.

SEO often optimizes forGEO also optimizes for
A page ranking for a queryA claim being selected for an answer
Click-through rateCitation, mention, and recommendation share
Individual keywordsTopic, entity, and intent coverage
Authority of a domainCorroboration of a specific claim
Search trafficInfluence across a nonlinear buyer journey

The disciplines share foundations: crawlability, useful content, strong information architecture, earned authority, and clear intent. GEO adds answer-level observation and a stronger focus on retrievable passages, entity consistency, evidence, and third-party consensus.

A useful maturity model

The brand is absent for important category questions.
The brand appears occasionally, but framing and facts vary.
The brand and its evidence are cited consistently for relevant questions.
The brand is recommended for the right use cases and the recommendation converts.

What GEO cannot promise

No one controls generated answers. Models, retrieval indexes, personalization, location, and product interfaces change. A credible program improves the probability and quality of inclusion; it does not guarantee a fixed placement.
